Bill 5 erodes our civil liberties. Bill 5 would give the Premier and his cabinet unprecedented control over the province, including the ability to exempt individuals and corporations from provincial and municipal laws and bypass consultation with Indigenous communities. It allows for “special economic zones” that are not subject to provincial and municipal laws. This has the potential to be used (and abused) by current and future governments at the expense of vulnerable communities and ecosystems. Bypassing environmental assessments and protections and changing what defines a creature's habitat to be extremely narrow, will spell destruction for many creatures, plants and ecosystems that are important for OUR health and survival and for healthy land and water. We do not stand alone, we are interconnected with living species. Add to all this, that Bill 5 will infringe on and violate treaty agreements with Indigenous peoples. It will also reduce consultation or eliminate Indigenous consultation when an archeological assessment is also bypassed in the name of infrastructure. Indigenous consultation and support is needed. They are stewards and protectors of the land and we consistently undermine them, and our environment, to our own peril. Please withdraw Bill 5.
