Kebaowek First Nation (KFN) has reviewed the proposed changes to the Endangered Species Act, 2007 and the proposed enactment of the Species Conservation Act, 2025, and we are compelled to respond with strong opposition and grave concern.
The actual substance of the proposal reflects a regressive dismantling of key environmental protections. It prioritizes expedience and economic growth over meaningful ecological stewardship and Indigenous rights.
The proposed legislation not only undermines the purpose of species protection—it also threatens to circumvent the legal duty to consult with Indigenous Nations whose rights, lands, and ways of life will be directly and negatively impacted.
