Hello,
I am writing to strongly object to the proposed exemptions from the Environmental Bill of Rights on the Ontario Place project. This will remove the right of Ontarian's to be advised of, or comment on, any required permits at Ontario Place (on or off site) to support the project. The consequences of these exemptions undercuts the entire purpose of the Environmental Bill of Rights -- it's existence remains to ensure that Ontario's environment is protected in all forms for future generations.
As this applies to Ontario Place, thousands have spoken out about their concerns related to protection of this fragile waterfront ecosystem. They have consistently provided well-informed, intelligent commentary along with realistic and reasonable alternatives to the government's current plans. This move not only deprives citizens of their rights but the government of valuable community input & knowledge.
The proposal is not in the public interest, compromises the future of this critical waterfront site and serves to only benefit the private interests of foreign companies. Instead, it represents one more compromise in environmental protection and citizen's rights to be informed, at a time when along with Ontario, the rest of the planet is facing a large scale environmental and biodiversity crisis. Selectively gutting the environmental protections in place is a terrible idea. So much has already been lost in this area under the guise of providing a "health and wellness" facility, we cannot allow further actions without input of everyday Ontarians.
