I am writing to object in the strongest possible terms to the proposed changes under Bill 5, Reducing Red Tape for Stronger Communities Act, 2024, particularly those that seek to exempt projects such as Ontario Place from key provisions of the Environmental Bill of Rights (EBR).
As a physician and concerned Ontario resident, I am deeply alarmed by the attempt to remove the public’s right to be notified of and to comment on environmental permits related to Ontario Place, both on and off site. This is a direct attack on transparency, democratic engagement, and environmental accountability. The EBR was established precisely to ensure that Ontarians have a say in decisions that affect their environment, health, and future. Removing those rights sets a dangerous precedent.
Thousands of Ontarians have raised thoughtful, well-informed concerns about the ecological sensitivity of the Ontario Place waterfront and the risk that current development plans pose to this fragile ecosystem. Citizens have also proposed reasonable, realistic alternatives. Exempting these projects from public oversight not only denies Ontarians their democratic rights—it denies the government access to valuable local and expert knowledge.
The proposed exemption is not in the public interest. It compromises a unique and ecologically important urban waterfront site for the benefit of private, foreign corporate interests. It represents yet another rollback in environmental protection and public accountability at a time when Ontario—and the world—is facing a worsening climate and biodiversity crisis.
From a public health perspective, this is especially alarming. Human health is inextricably linked to the health of our ecosystems. Clean air and water, access to nature, and the mitigation of urban heat and pollution through green infrastructure are not optional—they are essential to preventing disease and promoting community resilience. The degradation of environmental protections through Bill 5 undermines the very conditions necessary for health and well-being, particularly for our most vulnerable populations.
I urge the government to withdraw these exemptions and uphold the principles of environmental justice, public consultation, and long-term stewardship. Ontario must act not just in the interest of today’s political expediencies, but in the interest of future generations.
Please heed the health implications outlined above. This is an urgent public health matter.
