Dear Public Input Coordinator – Species at Risk Protection:
I am writing as a concerned citizen who values our country’s biodiversity. Bill 5 threatens to weaken protections for species at risk and their habitats – protections that have been established through decades of scientific research and conservation efforts.
The Protect Ontario by Unleashing our Economy Act, 2025, proposes major changes that will weaken our ability to protect endangered species in Ontario. From drastically weakening permitting processes and definitions of what harms a species, to redefining what a species habitat is, there are huge implications for the future of Ontario’s wildlife. These proposed actions are not science-based, and the proposed changes will have serious, lasting impacts on species at risk in Ontario.
I am deeply concerned about Bill 5, and I urge you to reconsider this bill and maintain strong environmental laws that prevent extinction and preserve Ontario’s natural heritage.
Thank you for your attention to this critical matter.
