I am writing to voice my concern about and opposition of the Protect Ontario by Unleashing our Economy Act, 2025.
This act would put unprecedented power into the hands of the Ontario government, giving Ministers the authority to ignore local communities, Indigenous rightsholders, independent scientists and municipal and provincial laws.
I am particularly concerned about undermining the Environmental Bill of Rights, 1993 with the amendments being made to the Rebuilding Ontario Place Act, 2023
The proposal details state: “The proposed legislation provides an exemption from Part II of the Environmental Bill of Rights, 1993, which includes requirements for giving public notice and opportunities for comment, for proposals for provincial permits and approvals related to the Ontario Place redevelopment project, or that further the project (i.e., not at the site). Proposals for these permits and approvals would otherwise be required to be posted to the Environmental Registry of Ontario.” It is extremely concerning to me that the provincial government would want to restrict public input into projects that affect the public. The goal of a democratic system is to allow everyone to have a voice. Shutting out the voices of the people seems undemocratic and shortsighted.
I understand that industry is critical to this province and its economy. I don’t want to halt all work and economic growth. I don’t want to make building houses or mining minerals impossible. I also believe, however, that industry without checks and balances has led time and time again to the abuse of the environment and workers’ rights. It also would be unhelpful in the work toward reconciliation with Indigenous communities across the province. Avoiding the input of people affected by projects being undertaken will lead to vulnerable and underrepresented populations being ignored during any decision-making process, and don't all Ontarians have the right to be heard and cared for? I don't believe the entirety of this bill is terrible, there are sections I agree with, but if it is passed in its current form it will cause irreparable damage to Ontario's ecosystems, and to the lives and rights of many Ontarians. I believe the government has a duty to respect and protect both its constituents and the land over which it governs. It also has the responsibility to act in a democratic fashion that ensures all constituents have a voice. This bill would be a step back for Ontario. I sincerely hope you take this perspective into consideration.
