This bill violates the rights of already vulnerable Indigenous people of the north, nevermind the clear exploitative nature of the bill when it comes to ramping up development in this province at an irresponsible rate. Specifically, it clearly undermines the power of Matawan First Nations people, who have the right to adhere to the Unity Declaration signed by their member communities. Further to this, evidence-based research has demonstrated the impacts of resource extraction, including to mental health and gender-based violence, on Indigenous communities. This bill is NOT in the spirit of the TRC calls to action. Why must we continue to allow history to repeat itself over and over again?
