These amendments pose a significant threat to the ecological health and biodiversity of our province. Weakening protections for wetlands, woodlands, and other natural features—particularly by shifting to a more discretionary, streamlined evaluation process—will open the door to irreversible damage. Ontario’s wetlands and natural areas are vital not only for their intrinsic ecological value, but also for their role in flood mitigation, water filtration, carbon storage, and climate resilience.
The cumulative impact of the proposed changes, including allowing development in and around previously protected natural heritage features, runs counter to Ontario’s own stated goals of sustainable development and climate adaptation. This move appears to prioritize short-term development gains over long-term environmental stewardship and the wellbeing of future generations.
I urge the government to halt these proposed changes and instead engage in transparent consultation with environmental experts, Indigenous communities, and the public. Ontario needs a science-based, conservation-first approach that respects our ecosystems and the interconnected services they provide.
Protecting Ontario’s natural heritage is not a barrier to progress—it is a foundation for a healthy, prosperous, and sustainable future.
