Altering environmental protections to favour faster turnarounds for development projects is ridiculous and will only encourage habitat destruction. The natural environment is complex and interdependent, time needs to be taken for assessments of habitats and the impact of proposed construction.
Allowing a governing party decide if a species is or isn't at risk also introduces a massive potential for corruption. We have already seen collusion between development firms and the Ontario government. I am concerned that giving any government body the power to strip a protected habitat of that designation will result in those habitats being destroyed once the percieved economic gain outweighs the potential backlash.
