Reject this bill. I do not trust that "the province will continue to provide information and protection guidance for species through policies and implementation supports." They clearly disregarded any information towards their policy development that came from current conservation groups that oppose this bill. I do not trust that future guidance from the province will be in the best interest of any species.
I reject the approach presented by this bill: "This approach will be paired with strong investigative and enforcement powers, including warrantless searches, compliance and mitigation orders, and prosecution leading to hefty fines and the possibility of jail time." This approach does not prevent the destruction of habitat. It lists possible punishments that will not even occur given that this same bill does not allow for destruction of habitat to be considered an offence because it changes the definition of habitat. This approach uses enforcement powers that I cannot condone morally given all of the existing research on the ways these listed powers have harmed many communities. I do not trust that these powers will be used within the context of the bill. I do not trust that these powers will not be used outside the context of this bill.
I oppose bill 5. I want stronger environmental protections and the protection of endangered species. I oppose shortcuts for industry. I oppose overriding the law in special economic zones. I expect meaningful consultation with First Nations. I expect a moratorium on any projects on disputed lands.
