The endangered species system is set up for a reason, to help decrease the effects that human activity has on vulnerable populations of animals. Beyond the moral and ethical implications of limiting our cause of the extinction of other species and the exploitation of the land, maintaining healthy and diverse wildlife populations is beneficial for humans in the control and prevention of diseases (most of which are emerging diseases that can have huge impacts on agriculture and human health), control of invasive species, are beneficial for tourism, and help maintain important ecological roles. The habitats that these species occupy and the protection afforded by this law is a also a strong source of tourism and provincial pride. These all feedback to have a more stable ecosystem and direct economic benefit. As a wildlife veterinarian in Toronto, I am vehemently opposed to the limiting of the Endangered Species Act, and find it's consideration to be ignorant, self-serving, short-sighted, and unethical.

Tell Doug Ford and the rest of these people to take an ecology course before they inadvertently ruin the province for the rest of us.
