I am against the proposed changes to the Endangered Species Act, as I do not believe that the government should have carte blanche to remove species from the endangered species list for the purposes of habit destruction caused by real estate and unnecessary infrastructure.
The government is not made up of scientists and therefore does not have the qualifications to make these decisions, and I seriously doubt a for-profit industry's willingness to participate in voluntary measures to protect at risk species.
The loss of even one species in an ecosystem can have catastrophic effects on every other species living in that ecosystem, including humans.
Many of Ontario's native plants and animals are already being threatened by human activity and the proposed changes to the Endangered species act, as well as the proposed new act will only serve to threaten them even more.
