I am writing to strongly oppose Bill 5: the Protect Ontario By Unleashing Our Economy Act. Repealling the Endangered Species Act will remove existing protections of at-risk species and make them vulnerable to extinction. This will significantly change the shape of Ontario's ecosystems for decades to come. The Special Economic Zones Act removes accountability of individuals and corporations from complying with current laws that protect Ontario residents, both human and non-human. Enabling private interests to engage in production however they wish will cause more harm to Ontario residents than it will stimulate Ontario's economy, in the form of increased pollution of our air, water and soil. For preserving the ecosystems we have and the public health of all Ontarians, the Ontario government should withdraw Bill 5. I urge the Ontario government to pursue venues and opportunities that will both stimulate Ontario's economy, and protect Ontario's residents.
