I strongly oppose Bill 5 and the proposed repeal of Ontario’s Endangered Species Act. This change would significantly weaken protections for over 270 species at risk and the habitats they depend on.
The new Species Conservation Act would remove science-based decision-making, replace strong habitat protections with vague “feature”-based protections, and allow development to proceed without proper environmental oversight. Creating special economic zones where species protections don’t apply is particularly alarming and puts Ontario’s biodiversity at risk for short-term gains.
Healthy ecosystems are critical to our economy and wellbeing. I urge the government to abandon this legislation and uphold strong, science-driven protections for endangered species and their habitats.
As a plea from an Ontarian, please continue to protect Ontario's wildlife and their habitat.
