Fast-tracking land development without indigenous consultation and environmental assessments is irresponsible and is not the way of our future. Much of Ontario is still rich in natural habitat, habitat which requires protection for every Ontarian’s wellbeing. Without properly functioning forests, wetlands and riverine habitats, Ontarians are at risk. These habitats protect us from flooding, protect our drinking water and air quality, and are more important than ever as we face a changing climate.
The framing of Bill 5 as a response to US-Canada relations and a solution to the housing crisis is thinly veiled and directly attacks the environment, indigenous rights and species at risk protection. This proposed bill directly attacks every citizen of this province and does not represent the voices of the generation that will be impacted by this governments actions. The environment does not belong to us, but it is up to us to protect the lands, waters and species that make up this province.
