How you value birds and natural areas and see them as an important part of your life and the identity of Ontarians.
My entire life has revolved around natural areas, and subsequently birds. My earliest and most cherished memories are of my father and I camping up north and seeing Canada jays, his favourite bird. I have since modelled my life after these animals, where I am working through a Master’s of Biology degree, solely to work with and to help birds. My social structure is entirely made up of individuals who share the same interests as me, and without birds and natural areas, our most cherished aspect of Canada would vanish. I strongly believe that Ontario needs to stand up and protect its most vulnerable inhabitants, that being species at risk. It is CRUCIAL that Ontario not only protect the “dwelling places” of these birds, but as many natural areas as we can. The overwhelming majority of bird species DEPEND on sites that are not considered “dwelling places” as intermediate points during migration. These sites and many others must be protected as well. I do not see any plan for protecting migratory birds, which is so incredibly disappointing. Canada and Ontario are so important for many species of migratory birds. WE NEED to protect our endangered species, and the visiting migratory species as well. Birds and natural areas are key aspects of what myself and many others believe it is to be truly Canadian, and without them we would be losing a huge aspect of our beautiful country.
Please, please, please, protect our birds and our natural areas.
