The proposed changes to the endangered species act removes long standing protections for endangered species and would be detrimental for these species across the province. These changes only benefit development and not the natural resources or species that need protection. Removing habitat requirements also adds another step to the damage of our natural resources and the demise of native wildlife. Enforcing permitting and maintaining regulations has already been a challenge for protecting species and habitat, and to remove these laws will completely open up important habitat to destruction, resulting in a huge decline of already at risk species. In addition, these proposed changes are against the rights of Indigenous Peoples in Ontario, and proper consultation with Indigenous groups and communities has not been done.
Ironic to call the proposed act the Species Conservation Act, while actively stripping conservation and protection from these species.
