I am writing as a concerned citizen to say that I strongly oppose the exemptions from the Environmental Bill of Rights that will damage not only our delicate environment, but also cause harm to infrastructure, the rights of Ontarians and their health. The government has a duty to listen to it's people and follow rules and regulations that were created for good reason.
People have repeatedly and in large numbers, spoken out against the Ontario government's use of "building affordable housing" as an excuse to ignore the opinion of the public. We have time and again asked for more regulation on speculators and multi-home home owners, yet we are ignored in favour of environmental destruction for new developments.
I also fail to see how building a foreign owned spa at the expense of the Ontario tax payers helps "Protect Ontario" or "Unleashes our Economy". While the community and other branches of government continue to provide well researched and well thought-out commentary, the Ontario government is seeking to provide less.
We're already seeing coyotes moving into the city thanks to removal of ecosystems around Toronto likely including the removal of the ecosystem at Ontario Place's west island as a full environemtnal impact study was not conducted. The last thing we need is even less oversight on the Ontario government's treatment of the environment and it's people. This proposal is not in the public interest. It threatens what little remains of our waterfront ecosystem, fails to achieve the act's proposed goal and sets a frightening precedent for citizen's right to be informed and comment.
