I am opposed to the dismantling of environmental protections proposed in this Bill.
As an environmental professional in Ontario, wildlife face enormous threats from habitat loss. There are dozens of species-at-risk that are only found in particular habitats in Ontario - especially those that have experienced >90% habitat loss like the Carolinian Forest and Tall-grass Prairie. These species continue to decline in numbers and will eventually disappear. Removing and dismantling environmental protections will speed up the eventual extinction of these species.
There are very small changes needed to make major differences for the fate of endangered populations of wildlife such as prioritizing areas for needed greenspace where these populations are present.
Environmental protections do work, for instance the rebound of raptor populations due to the ban on DDT. Over time, the compounding effect of existing measures under the ESA has slowed down population declines of endangered species. This bill will speed up extinction rates.
