I strongly urge the government not to pass this bill. The government should not be exempt from laws designed to protect our planet and people. Archaeology is not red tape. People’s history and heritage is not red tape. Many of the proposed changes to the Ontario Heritage Act are disrespectful, lack understanding and go against UNDRIP. This is not the answer to US tariffs. Throwing away Ontario’s environment, nature and history with no oversight, assessment and protection is not the answer. Allowing the government to exempt certain projects from thorough and meaningful assessment and consultation at the government’s sole discretion is dangerous and short sighted. Laws and protections exist in society for a reason and the government should not be allowed to exempt themselves from them.
