The Thames Region Ecological Association is strictly against the changes proposed in Bill 5 because of its potential to have a large negative impact on species conservation in Ontario, as well as threaten farmland and water resources. Ontario has been rapidly developing over the last decade, and while the concern for increasing development to lower housing costs might be justifiable, the proposed approach is not the correct path forward for Ontario.
Ontarians are very lucky to have the wildlife that we have, and it should be considered an important resource for the province's health. The current laws are in place to protect the environment and wildlife - which often do not have enough of a say in development conversations. We are concerned, as an organization, that rollbacks and allowing development before permits are approved will endanger species and have negative effects on our lands.
We are concerned with the current government's approach and we do not see it as in the interest of Ontarians - now or in the long-term. An act of this magnitude should be crafted with more discussion with Ontarians. We fear this current bill disregards the values of Ontarians - similar to the current government's previous decisions on the Greenbelt area changes. Considering the environment now and in the future is imperative to the province's health. We highly encourage the province to find an approach the balances housing priorities alongside species health and sustainability.
