"To Premier Doug Ford and the Government of Ontario,
I am writing to express my deep concern and outrage regarding the proposed Bill 5, a regressive and environmentally catastrophic piece of legislation that seeks to undermine decades of conservation work and gut the Endangered Species Act in Ontario. This bill does not serve the people of Ontario—it serves private developers and corporate interests, at the immense cost of our province's rich biodiversity and ecological stability.
Bill 5 represents a direct assault on critical habitats that endangered and at-risk species rely upon for survival. It paves the way—quite literally—for the destruction of wetlands, forests, and sensitive ecosystems so that they may be bulldozed and built over. These ecosystems are not just homes for wildlife; they are essential carbon sinks, natural flood prevention systems, and biodiversity hotspots. Wetlands alone sequester vast amounts of carbon and help prevent the very climate disasters we are already beginning to see increase in frequency and intensity.
The disregard shown in this bill toward endangered species is both scientifically reckless and morally reprehensible. Ontario is home to over 230 species at risk, many of which are already struggling to survive due to habitat loss, pollution, and human interference. Weakening the legal protections that stand between these species and extinction is a betrayal—not only of our wildlife but of future generations who will inherit the consequences of short-sighted governance.
Biodiversity is not a luxury—it is a necessity. A diverse and balanced ecosystem is our first line of defense against pandemics and emerging diseases, many of which arise when natural habitats are disrupted and species are forced into closer contact with human populations. Destroying ecosystems doesn’t just impact animals—it impacts people. It affects water quality, air quality, food systems, and human health.
Bill 5's timing is as manipulative as its contents. Using geopolitical tensions and public distraction to force through legislation that would never stand up to proper scrutiny is not leadership—it is exploitation. The people of Ontario deserve transparency, not backroom deals that put the profits of a select few ahead of the public good.
Premier Ford, your government’s ongoing pattern of devaluing the environment, favoring developers, and dismantling vital protections shows a profound misunderstanding of what true prosperity and sustainability look like. If passed, Bill 5 will not only mark a dark chapter in Ontario’s environmental history—it will define your legacy as one built on the ruination of nature, rather than the stewardship of it.
Ontario can and must do better. We need leaders who are willing to defend the natural heritage that makes this province great—not sell it off to the highest bidder. Bill 5 is a betrayal of the public trust, a threat to the natural world, and an affront to science and ethics.
I urge you, in the strongest possible terms, to withdraw this bill and to prioritize the long-term health of Ontario’s ecosystems, species, and communities over short-term economic gain and political maneuvering.
Sincerely,"
