ERO 025-0380
As a Canadian citizen residing in Ontario, I’m submitting these comments regarding ERO 025-0380, “Proposed interim changes to the Endangered Species Act, 2007 and a proposal for the Species Conservation Act, 2025”.
I have serious concerns about these proposed changes and respectfully request that they be withdrawn in their entirety. My reasons include the following:
- Replacement of the Endangered Species Act, 2007, with the much less robust framework of the Species Conservation Act, 2025, will result in weakened and inadequate protection for our most threatened species and ecosystems.
- Narrowing of protective habitats, ignoring crucial feeding grounds and migration corridors, exposes species to the threat of extinction without directly “killing” them.
- Replacing the permit requirement to undertake activities that will kill or harm species at risk with a simple registration process undermines protection and opens the door for projects to proceed before the implications for species at risk are fully known.
- Eliminating the focus on species’ recovery strategies and programming rejects scientifically sound and globally agreed international protection approaches and targets. This proposal substitutes an approach that is not scientifically tenable.
Thank you for taking these comments into consideration.
