It is hard to believe that Ford has genuine concerns for the environment, and is not simply attempting to exploit loopholes or remove already limited restrictions on business at the expense of the environment, given his Ontario place spa debacle. Terms such as 'unleashing the economy' (disturbingly similar to things Trump himself has been saying), do not give me any faith. The economy--while hugely important, and in distress--simply cannot continue to be prioritized above all, and at the expense of all else. Especially as thus far, economy-first bills have not had the impact that were promised, and the price is always more dear than we know.
I do not want 'special economic zones' that could be exempt from laws, crucially, environmental laws. The environment is important everywhere. No place should be exempt from such concerns. I am especially concerned about the Greenbelt, and Ford using this bill to justify destroying this land.
Endangered species need protection, more protection, not less. I believe limiting the definition of the term 'habitat' enables the government too much leeway, to reduce the issue to simply a matter of re-homing this one nest/den/etc rather than acknowledge that animals need places to live just as much as we. And while humans can get into cars and drive to a grocery store, an animal must have space around their basic dwelling that enables them to live. That is just as important to their livliood as parks and grocery stores, and shops and schools are to us.
These changes seem like more of the Ford agenda: development first, and forsake the rest. The economy is waves at us like a lure, to pacify the public from recognizing what is being stolen from us in front of our eyes.
Speaking of stolen, how are Indigenous Rights being safeguarded and secured under these proposed changes, within this bill?
