I am writing to express my deep concern regarding the proposed changes to the Endangered Species Act (ESA) in Ontario. The ESA is a critical piece of legislation that exists to protect species at risk and their habitats. Weakening its provisions will significantly undermine efforts to prevent extinction and biodiversity loss in the province.
The proposed amendments appear to prioritize short-term economic development over long-term ecological sustainability. Granting more exemptions or delaying protections creates loopholes that could allow harmful activities in ecologically sensitive areas. This contradicts the intent of the Act, which is to ensure science-based, precautionary approaches to conservation.
Ontario’s rich biodiversity is a public trust and should be protected for current and future generations. I urge the government to strengthen, not weaken, the ESA by ensuring that:
- Habitat protections remain science-driven and enforced
- Recovery strategies are implemented without delay
- Development proposals are rigorously assessed with transparency and public input.
Please reconsider these changes and commit to a path that balances responsible development with the urgent need to preserve Ontario’s natural heritage.
