I strongly oppose Bill 5.
Creation is a gift we squander to our regret. Money buys less than we think it does, a fact we've learned from having it overflow our pockets yet fill not two inches of our souls. To sacrifice the product of millions of years on the altar of jobs a few decades long will be seen as foolishness by our descendants. Who remembers the passenger pigeon, the bison, the cod, the right whale, the great auk with any sense but that of tragic stupidity?
We are blessed with a richness of fellow creatures in whose presence we take peace -- I cannot tell you from where that peace comes because I do not know, but walk an old forest, unmarred by human hand, and try to deny it. When the turtles are gone, when the marshes are quiet, we will wonder at our ceaseless agitation and how we ever thought the comfort of a few could be worth the cost.
