This proposed bill will have many negative impacts on the people of Ontario while unacceptably reducing the accountability and responsibility of the government to it's population. It should not pass due to several factors.
Specifically, the vague and wide-ranging power to create special economic zones anywhere in the province would enable the violation of hard-earned labour rights, directly impacting the workers that make Ontario's economy function.
Additionally, the bill seems to disregard the constitutionally guaranteed Indigenous Rights and the requirement to consult in good faith with Indigenous communities on their traditional lands.
Further, removing any kind environmental protection goes directly against the Ontario Government's publicly stated objectives at protecting the air, land and water of the province. Supporting economic activities does not have to come at the expense of our precious environment, especially considering how many vital industries (such as logging and forestry) depend on healthy and vibrant ecosystems.
In short, this bill seems to be an attempt to consolidate power and avoid accountability to anyone in the province, allowing the provincial government to do whatever it sees fit without considering the impacts on and the responsibilities owed to it's populace.
