I oppose the proposed interim changes to the Endangered Species Act, 2007 and a proposal for the Species Conservation Act, 2025.
The proposed changes serve to weaken current protections and demonstrates the governments shift to prioritize profit over environmental protection and conservation.
Shifting to a registration-first approach reenforces the “ask forgiveness not permission” strategy which would result in irreversible harm to Ontario’s species and their habitats, leaving society to bear the long-term costs.
Instead, focus should be on taking steps to strengthen protections to ensure species, and their habitats can be enjoyed for generations.
