I am very saddened that at a time when we are starting to see the impacts of climate change more and more, we continue to amend acts like this to remove vital protections for the environment. Changing the definition of habitat is not in the name of avoiding confusion, it simply narrows the definition of a habitat allowing developments to be approved in areas where endangered species could be harmed. Removing the concept of “harass” also strips important protections. The new registration-first approach will allow many more developments to bypass certain regulations, when they no longer need to be reviewed and acquire a permit before proceeding. These are simply a few problems with the new proposed changes; ones that are extremely disappointing at a time like this. I sincerely hope that you, the ministry, will retract these changes that will have irreversible consequences on our environment and avoid taking a massive step in the wrong direction. There is no “unleashing our economy” if there is no healthy environment to sustain it…
