I am extremely concerned with the proposal to transfer provincial beaches 1 and 2 as well as Tiny beach to the Town of Wasaga Beach . The proposed “need” is to increase tourism , but I feel that it will indeed have the opposite effect and tourists will refrain from coming .
Wasaga Beach plans to build condominiums all along the waterfront of Beach 1and 2. These will be high priced accommodations that the general public cannot afford . In other waterfront cities in Ontario ( Collingwood, Toronto for example) such development intimidates the general public from accessing the waterfront simply by its presence .
Council has plans to eliminate parking close by , further making it difficult for families with children to carry their beach day belongings to the beachfront as they will have to walk a considerable distance to get there .
So what possible benefit to tourism comes from giving the town control of the main beaches?
They are already reducing access on the lands that they own. What can they possibly improve on the strip of beach that leads to the lake ? Will they choose to make portions private for the condo owners? Will they put in Marina’s to pollute the swimming waters of tourists? Will council choose to make it a playground for the rich , eliminating the vast majority of Ontario residents from enjoying a reasonably priced day at the beach?
I foresee Beach 1 and 2 being for the wealthy and the rest of the beaches for the less fortunate .
By approving this transfer you are in effect creating 2 classes of people accessing the beachfront . A discrimination in the most blatant form that does not fool anybody .
I urge you to reconsider this proposal and to turn it down . It serves no purpose other than to make those beaches inaccessable and discriminatory to those without the wealth to visit there .
