I am against this proposal. While it is understandable that the municipality wants to expand its economic growth, this could be accomplished without transferring ownership. Wasaga Beach hosted nearly 2 million visitors in 2023, so I do not think the transference is necessary to meet tourism goals.
Moreover, I am horrified that the provincial government is considering carving up public land for development opportunities. I go to provincial parks to enjoy the beautiful nature Ontario has to offer and I am worried that this proposal represents a step towards de-valuing and destroying our natural heritage. I am also concerned that this proposal sets a dangerous precedent for selling off our public lands and I find the reassurance from the province lacking.
Additionally, Wasaga Beach is the best remaining breeding habitat for Piping Plovers in Ontario. The species returned to Ontario after a 30 year absence and their continued presence is the result of nearly 30 more years of conservation efforts. Transferring Wasaga Beach out of the provincial park would remove the obligation for their breeding habitat to be protected and would put the species at risk of being lost from Ontario once again. Furthermore, Wasaga Beach is considered a relict beach with non-replenishing sand. Carrying out development activities or altering beach management for tourism purposes (eg raking/grooming) would destroy the delicate dune ecosystems which prevent erosion. I am concerned increased tourism or development activities would harm the existence of the beach itself.
I urge you to reconsider this proposal, or at least create concessions to care for the unique species and habitats at Wasaga Beach.
