I strongly support Ontario Parks in formalizing climbing access while ensuring the protection of natural spaces. Rock climbing offers people a unique way to connect with the land — fostering physical health, mental well-being, and a deep appreciation for the outdoors.
At the same time, I recognize the importance of preserving Ontario’s ecosystems and cultural heritage. By formalizing climbing, Ontario Parks has the opportunity to put clear guidelines in place that balance recreation with conservation. This could include designated climbing areas, seasonal restrictions to protect nesting wildlife, and ongoing collaboration with the climbing community to minimize environmental impact.
Climbers are often passionate stewards of the environment. When access is supported and regulated, the community is more able and motivated to contribute to trail maintenance, habitat protection, and education around sustainable practices.
Formalizing climbing is not only a way to protect the natural spaces we all value, but also a chance to build a strong partnership between Ontario Parks and the climbing community to ensure these landscapes thrive for future generations.
