This is a bill with many problems, most of which affect my daily life. I am a tenant and I bike for work and general commute around the city of Toronto. This bill alters my future planning and makes my life unsafe. First, the removal of tenant protection on behalf of financial/corporate landlords: Minister Flack, Attorney General Downey, and the FRPO representative Tony Irwin (who shockingly was present during the corresponding announcement without any worry of the conflict of interest, I wonder if this is a joke! Where were the tenant advocacy groups? Were they consulted? Why weren't they present?) claim that their proposals brings balance to Residential Tenancy Act and equally protects landlords and tenants. This is completely false. Tenants need more protection than landlords (specially corporate landlords). If a tenant faces a bad landlord the consequences are far greater than if a landlord faces a bad tenant. All protections that a tenant can have during Landlord and Tenant Board (LTB) hearings to help special circumstance tenants and protect human dignity are being tweaked to protect landlords and their profit margin. This is shocking. Housing is a human right and this bill and this government is not upholding their duties to serve the public. Second, banning construction of new bike lanes across the province: well this is a remake of Bill 212 with true intentions of the Premier Ford and his government all on display. There were never a good faith challenge of how the bike lanes were being constructed or how we could alleviate congestion issues for all types of commuters. No. This is a blatant instruction telling people that the best mode of transportation is to use cars everywhere. If you decide to bike, you are not protected by law and you are doing it at your own risk. No protection from government. Our government is not doing its job properly.
