I live in Toronto. I commute by bicycle to work daily, and do all our shopping by bicycle.
I value safe infrastructure in the city. When cyclists are forced to share vehicle lanes, it is dangerous for cyclists, putting us at risk of serious injury or death. Manoeuvring in traffic lanes is often confusing for both vehicle drivers and cyclists. If enacted, Bill 60 would increase hazardous conditions on city roads.
There is no value in eliminating bike lanes in order to save time for vehicle drivers; the government's own consultants have pointed out that bike lanes do not cause traffic congestion.
Bill 60 would also compromise public transit priority, safe crossings, patios, curbside access, and school streets.
The bill would also obstruct the city from reaching its climate goals.
Bill 60 would deprive all Ontario cities of their authority to decide for themselves the best street designs, even when they are backed by solid evidence and positive feedback from a majority of citizens. It would reduce democracy.
Thank you for considering my comments.
