This proposal will not make travelling by car easier or reduce gridlock. It will also make the roads more dangerous for all road users, not just cyclists. Study after study has shown that adding more car lanes only causes more cars to use those lanes, increasing, gridlock and air pollution. The only proven solution to reducing traffic is by making viable alternatives to driving easy, safe and reliable. Restructuring a street to reduce a car lane and add a protected bike lane or a priority transit lane will move more people, more safely. Car traffic will also improve since with better alternatives to driving less people will have to drive, reducing the overall amount of cars on the road and reducing traffic and gridlock. This is a proven system that works in municipalities across the world.

This proposal and the motion to eliminate speed cameras show that this government is on a mission to make Ontario’s streets more dangerous for all users — drivers, transit users, cyclists and pedestrians alike. Please reconsider this!
