I do not understand the purpose of limiting road use to cars and trucks. It doesn't make practical or policy sense.
I drive a car. When I am driving a car, I prefer that cyclists be in bike lanes, preferably separated from the motor vehicle lane. When road space is allocated clearly among different users, it keeps us all in our lanes moving and safe. Likewise, for buses in rapid transit lanes. The bus isn't moving to the curb to stop, then pulling back out. It is in its allocated space. The arterial roads are all wide enough for each mode of transport to have allocated space.
When I cycle in the city, the situation is the same. The safest, fastest way to get around is when each mobility choice has its own space.
This legislation effectively tells me as a driver that I am more important and have a greater right to the road than me as a cyclist. Why? I'm the same person, paying taxes, trying to get somewhere in the vehicle I think is most effective for my purpose that day. I don't think I'm more important based on my vehicle choice. Why does this government?
I also cannot understand why this government can't leave it to the people who live in a city or town to allocate roads as they determine. That is the reason for having local governments. The province manages the highways, cities and towns manage municipal roads. This has always worked reasonably well.
If cars take all the space on roads, what happens if everyone decides to drive a car? The millions of people who take transit, cycle, or walk will be in cars. Just imagine the gridlock that will cause!
Never mind the pollution that will create. Very soon the only way to get anywhere will be to walk. Mind you, I guess that's good for public health.
This legislation simply makes no sense from a policy or practical perspective.
I urge you to reconsider: let municipalities determine municipal road use; which will include accommodating the safe passage of people regardless of their personal choice of mobility method.
Thank you.
