I am writing to express my strong opposition to the proposed wastewater treatment plant in Searchmont that would release treated effluent into the Goulais River.

The Goulais River is an important natural waterway that supports a delicate ecosystem, recreational activities, and downstream communities. Even “treated” wastewater introduces nutrients, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, microplastics, and other contaminants that can accumulate over time and lead to long-term ecological harm. Numerous communities across Canada have faced irreversible water quality degradation as a result of similar effluent discharges—often after being assured of “safe” levels at the outset.

Key concerns include:

Environmental and Ecological Risks: Treated effluent can alter water chemistry, harm fish and wildlife, and disrupt habitat conditions critical to the river’s biodiversity.

Public Health and Safety: A discharge point feeding into a popular river used for swimming, fishing, and recreation increases the risk of exposure to contaminants, especially during high-flow events or system failures.

Cultural and Community Impact: The Goulais River holds significant value for residents, visitors, and nearby Indigenous communities for recreation, cultural activities, tourism, and quality of life. Its protection must be prioritized.

Permanent Consequences: Once water quality declines, it is extremely difficult—often impossible—to restore. Preventing harm now is far more responsible than attempting repairs later at environmental and taxpayer expense.

I strongly urge the decision-making authorities to deny approval of any wastewater discharge into the Goulais River and require alternatives that do not compromise this vital water system. Options such as land-based treatment, closed-loop systems, or advanced non-discharge technologies must be fully examined and prioritized before considering any proposal that puts the river at risk.

Protecting the Goulais River is a responsibility owed to current residents and future generations. I am firmly opposed to this proposal and request that my concerns be formally acknowledged and considered as part of the review process.
