Policies for all species groups need careful consideration by either COSSARO or a panel of biologists specific to each family (birds, mammals, etc.). Policy needs to be based on science (including traditional indigenous practices) to protect our plants and animals adequately. We are not simply protecting isolated species; everything in nature works together. It is ignorant to believe that you can alter one species without harming the ecosystem on an ecosystem-wide level.
There needs to be well-funded, thoughtful monitoring programs, led by Indigenous communities as the guardians of their own lands.
