The Forest Gene Conservation Association (FGCA) is submitting comments on Ontario’s proposed Species Conservation Act, 2025 (ERO 025-0908), emphasizing its long-standing expertise in conserving genetic diversity and resilience within Ontario’s forest ecosystems. Since 1997, FGCA has collaborated with industry, Indigenous communities, environmental groups, and research institutions to conserve and restore tree species while supporting climate adaptation and sustainable forestry.

FGCA supports modernization but stresses that certain provisions in the draft Act require revision to protect Ontario’s genetically distinct tree populations. Specifically, FGCA recommends that tree species be exempt from Clause (5) of Part 2, as external population assessments (e.g., in the U.S.) may not reflect Ontario’s genetic or ecological realities. They also highlight potential business and operational impacts under Clause (7) of Part 3 and Sections 19 and 22 concerning registrations and ministerial powers, recommending waiting periods and consultation before permit revocations.

FGCA requests consultation on decisions involving protected tree species, participation in setting conservation standards and codes of practice, and access to registration information to support recovery efforts. The Association remains committed to partnering with Ontario ministries to implement effective, science-based conservation practices that safeguard forest genetic diversity for future generations.
