Bike lanes should NOT be an all or nothing concept. I believe bike lanes have value, but I think they should be more carefully planned.
The bike lanes along most of the major roads could be a lot less problematic if a one-way approach was considered : instead of having bike lanes in both directions on two parallel main roads, consider having only one on each.
For example (City of Toronto, East York area), a north bound bike lane on Woodbine Avenue, and a south bound bike lane on Coxwell Avenue, rather than have north and south bound bike lanes on both.
My observation as a driver is that I rarely see cyclists on Woodbine avenue. I see maybe one cyclist out of every ten trips up or down Woodbine.
