I understand the frustration of drivers in Toronto as someone who has lived and driven here for 15 years. That tension exists because people want to be here. It’s a sign of life, of desirability. But every proposal that trades long-term urban health for short-term car votes chips away at our future.
It’s a short-term bandaid to think congestion can be solved by removing bike lanes or expanding car access. The truth is, personal-use cars simply don’t make sense in the dense cores of major cities. Cities that accept this reality sooner rather than later become more livable, more sustainable, and more internationally appealing for tourism.
If we’re not careful, Toronto downtown could become a hollowed-out shell—like Los Angeles, where car dominance has eroded the soul of the city.
