I support the Province’s plan to have one clear set of building rules across Ontario.
When the rules are the same everywhere, it makes our jobs easier. Builders, trades, and consultants don’t have to guess or redo work because every area wants something different. It also helps keep construction jobs steady because we can work anywhere in the province with the same standards.
But these standards need to be based on real facts. The National Research Council of Canada (NRC) has shown that heavy rain and big storms are only going to get worse. If we don’t plan ahead, flooding will damage homes, roads, and workplaces—and that means shut-downs, extra costs, and fewer jobs.
To keep our communities safe and keep construction moving, the Province should:
Update the stormwater manual to match the newest NRC information.
Set clear province-wide rules for handling rainwater on each lot, including green roofs, with simple targets to follow.
Add Toronto’s Green Roof Construction Standard into the Ontario Building Code so everyone installs them the same way.
Give incentives and funding for lot-level stormwater projects, since these will save money in the long run and reduce the need for big, expensive sewer upgrades.
If Ontario focuses on building stronger and smarter now, we can cut down on flooding, protect our communities, and keep construction jobs going strong.
