This proposal goes against multiple data studies that show traffic in cities is improved when installing bike lanes even when it reduces lanes for cars. Not only that but as both a driver and a cyclist, I feel safer and better able to drive when people who aren’t in cars have a separate space on the road. This proposal will not improve traffic, it will hamper municipalities from improving it.
Examples of studies:
1. Carnegie Mellon University found that even a small shift of 10% of short car trips to micromobility (like bikes or scooters) could lead to a substantial reduction in traffic congestion and vehicle miles traveled (Government Technology, 2023)
2. University of California, Los Angeles demonstrated that bike lanes can increase the speed of traffic for cars by reducing the number of lane changes and merging maneuvers (UCLA Institute of Transportation Studies, 2021)
