Members of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario:
I am writing to strongly oppose the proposed Bill 60.
1. Discouraging people of Ontario from considering alternatives to the environmentally damaging effect of automobiles is completely irresponsible. Bicycle lanes encourage people to commute, to do errands in their area, to attend meetings, etc. without getting into their cars. Many people do not own cars and designated bicycle lanes give them a safe way to travel.
2. This bill overrides municipal governments, who should be trusted to govern "closer to home." Municipal governments are much closer to the everyday lives of their people, and can shape the quality of life. Providing alternatives to vehicular transportation shows respect for the needs of particular localities, as well as for the local environment. Bill 60 is anti-democratic, encouraging rule from the 'top down.'
Respectfully submitted.
