Merging Conservation Authorities from 36 down to 7, risks losing local knowledge and input as well as the relationships that have allowed the RMOs to create plans that keep our drinking water safe.
The reasons given for such an amalgamation echo those of reducing the number of District Health Units just prior to our global pandemic.
Our CAs are doing great work. they presently have good local oversight and supervision by those familiar with the issues and challenges. Having another level of bureaucracy to authorize and approve plans does not offer safer process. It may expedite decision making but not based on issue knowledge and expertise but on a need to please developers and it creates GREAT risk... remember Walkerton?
Instead, rather, used the enhanced funding to put more boots on the ground so the CAs can offer more assistance with Storm water management and flood protection that only local knowledge can provide.
