I am writing to express my concern regarding the proposed amalgamation of the Sault Ste. Marie Region Conservation Authority (SSMRCA) into a new Northeastern Ontario Regional Conservation Authority.

The SSMRCA plays a vital role in our community through flood control infrastructure management, conservation land stewardship, development review, and the support of safe and sustainable recreational use. As a member and supporter of the Soo Finnish Nordic Ski Club, I regularly rely on lands managed by the SSMRCA for public access and trail-based recreation. The close working relationship between the Soo Finnish Nordic Ski Club and the SSMRCA has helped create high-quality outdoor recreational opportunities that benefit both local residents and visitors.

I am particularly concerned that the proposed consolidation could:

* Negatively impact recreational trail management, as any delays or reductions in local capacity may affect trail maintenance, land-use agreements, and reliable public access.
* Disrupt long-standing community partnerships that have taken decades to build between conservation authorities, municipalities, volunteers, and recreation organizations.

I respectfully urge the Province to prioritize local representation, local operational control, and the protection of northern community interests before proceeding with any restructuring. Conservation authorities have successfully delivered watershed protection and community stewardship for over 60 years, and any changes should strengthen—rather than weaken—local expertise, responsiveness, and accountability.

Thank you for considering my comments. I strongly encourage the Ministry to ensure that any future governance structures preserve the local stewardship and collaborative partnerships that are essential to protecting both our natural environment and our recreational opportunities.
