I have followed the updates and information sessions on the proposals for Oakville Midtown to be given the zoning order of a TOC (transit oriented community). I have even delegated my thoughts at a town council meeting. My opinion is that the TOC is a very poor idea, as Oakville knows our community the best and our town councillors and planners have solid ideas about how best to build more housing. The provincial plan will lead to massive traffic congestion problems in an area that is already overstretched in this regard. This has been my neighbourhood for over 20 years so I experience the issues first hand. The densification plan is FAR TOO DENSE and not well thought out and does not include appropriate room or thought for schools, shops, parking, and above all green space and parkland. Having mainly bachelor and one bedroom condos will lead to constant turnover and not create community. Existing residents will be burdened not just with absurd traffic, but also with tax bills for infrastructure and development costs. We are not against densification, but please allows our planners to use the full space around the GO station -- several acres are not included in the TOC and if used correctly, could house lots of people and allow for parkland, commercial development, and a more fullsome community.
