MTO Cycling Routes – Comments from Grey County

On-Road Routes Grey County is working with the Waterfront Regeneration Trust (WRT) to include parts of the proposed Georgian Bay Cycling Route as an extension of the Great Lakes Waterfront Trail along the shoreline of South Georgian Bay. An initial meeting was held in Owen Sound and support for the route confirmed. Grey County is now in the process of formally approving funding for the route, and confirming actual route alignment and support with its four member municipalities (Georgian Bluffs, City of Owen Sound, Meaford and The Blue Mountains.) A working draft of the route can be found at https://www.google.com/maps/d/edit?mid=1GKNC2PBo5GVVtdUONStYXFubxIw&ll=44.806255381531614%2C-81.319 05360000002&z=10, but is not final, and is different from the current route shown on the Draft provincial cycling map. As soon as the final route alignment is confirmed, which should be within the next month, this will be communicated to MTO by WRT or Grey County.

Heading south out of Owen Sound going west, the route would be better continuing on Grey Road 5 rather than turning down Inglis Falls Road. It would then come out on Grey Road 18 south. This area is scheduled for full 1.5m paved shoulders in 2017. Head south on Grey Road 18, then turn west onto Grey Road 5 toward Kilsyth.

Grey Road 119 in the Town of the Blue Mountains is very steep heading downhill. It will have fully paved shoulders in 2017 but riders should be aware it can up to 12% grade.

There in no straight forward on road route identified to get south from Owen Sound to the Mount Forest area (the key location to go to Guelph etc.)

Grey Road 4 (through Flesherton) does not currently have paved shoulders and is a fairly high volume road (2500-5000 AADT)

Off Road Routes

One additional comment is to note that the proposed off-road route along the CP Rail line running parallel to Hwy 10 from Owen Sound to Dundalk is also used by ATV’s for most of its length.
