Pg 9 under “Building on Success”: It states there is up to $30 million is being spent over the next 5 years under the Climate Change Action Plan. I have read both the Federal and Provincial Climate Change Action Plans and I could not find $30 million towards soil health initiatives…If that is going to be included in the initiatives already invested in, it needs to be elaborated on.
Pg 15 under “Reducing Tillage”: Need to ensure the responsible use of organic amendments are included in this research of conservation tillage practices.
Pg 17 under “Cover Crops”: Incentives are crucial here, and not just for new cover crop users. Need to encourage continued, economical use of cover crops.
Pg 18 under “Organic Amendments”: Under proposed action, need to add building a supply of organic amendments accessible across the province.
Pg 26 under “Soil Maps”: No mention of API’s or integrating with precision ag platforms.
Pg 26 under “Soil Test Data”: Need to place strong emphasis on the privacy behind individuals soil test information. That is their property and needs to be treated as such. This must be at the forefront of this initiative.
Pg 29 under “Measuring Soil Health”: A&L Canada Labs has already developed a soil health test- this should be evaluated.
Pg 33 under “Targets for Soil Health”: 50% of a farm’s annual cropland have a cover crop- this can be difficult in low heat unit areas of the Province with a three crop rotation. Could be evaluated by heat unit range and adjusted accordingly.
