Every Ontarian who can remember Three Mile Island, Chernobyl and Fukushima probably doesn't want any similar catastrophe to happen here. Unfortunately, the excellent report "A Call for Public Safety" declares that, because Ontario is nowhere near putting appropriate safety and accident-response provisions in place, such a catastrophe could actually happen. The main change needed, the report says, is to "meet or exceed current international best practices." This is no trivial criticism: The health and safety, indeed the lives, of millions of Ontarians living near one of the province's many aging nuclear plants are at risk. Our provincial government has to take this threat seriously.
